12 Jun Saratoga Speedway has been sold!
After 40 years of owning and operating Saratoga Speedway, the Hargrave Family is pleased to announce the sale of the facility.
The property now known as Saratoga Speedway was purchased by Dave and Paul in 1980. Originally built in 1968, was operated by the Oyster River Racing Association until 1978, when it closed. The Hargrave Family, in the sawmill business at that time, purchased it for a sawmill site. The overwhelming interest from the racing community, changed those plans, the sawmill was located on the Island Highway, where it is presently. The facility had its first reopening as Saratoga Speedway in 1981, sixteen race teams in one division participated. In 2019, more than 300 race teams competed at the local track in 22 divisions. Over the years the speedway has grown to become apart of our community, with the introduction of our young driver’s training program in 2005, participants as young as 10 years old are now racing.
We are thrilled to announce that Saratoga Speedway will remain as a Family run operation and has sold to Rob and Lee Leighton. They are very excited to move the track forward for years to come. Rob is the owner and operator of Leighton Contracting in Courtenay and is no stranger to racing. In 1999 Rob captured Saratoga’s Bomber Car Championship title, as well as the Stock Car title in 2005.
The Hargrave family would like to thank the racing community in all divisions from across Vancouver Island, our dedicated race fans, the unwavering support from race event sponsors and our local media. Most of all we would like to acknowledge our dedicated race volunteers, who gave up so much to a make Saratoga Speedway one of the best tracks in the province.
